This is a permanent residence visa for points-test skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia after being nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency. A Skilled Area Sponsored Visa is a Permanent Resident Visa which will allow you to live and work for 5 years in Australia. Applicants under this category must live for 2 years in the nominated state, which will be a specified condition in this category. This is a good option for those who do not score 60 points individually on Australian Immigration Points Test.

EOI:– To be able to apply for this visa, you must first submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect. If you receive an invitation, you will have 60 days to apply online for the visa. During that time, you cannot change the information in your expression of interest.

What does the visa let you do?

This visa lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa to:

• Stay in Australia indefinitely.
• Work and study in Australia.
• Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.
• Apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible).
• Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence.
• Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).

You must score at least 60 points against points test factors to be eligible to be invited to apply for this visa. Points are awarded on the basis of the factors listed below:

• Age:- You can receive up to 30 points based on the age you were on the day you were invited to apply. You must have been younger than 50 years of age when you were invited to apply for this visa.
• English language:- You must be able to demonstrate that you have at least competent English language ability at the time you are invited to apply and when you lodge your application.No points are awarded for competent English.

  You can receive 10 points for proficient English or 20 points for superior English.

  The results of one of the following English language tests, undertaken not more than 36 months prior to the time you were invited to apply for this visa, can be used to evidence your English language ability:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
• Occupational English Test (OET)
• Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)
• Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) test results will only be considered if the test was undertaken on or after 1 January 2015. A CAE test undertaken before 1 January 2015 cannot be accepted.

IELTS has an academic test and a general training test. You need only take the general training test unless your assessing authority tells you otherwise. You are only required to provide the test report form (TRF) number or the test registration number that is on your English language test certificate.

• Nominated occupation:- The applicant should nominate an occupation on the Consolidated Skilled Occupation List (CSOL) that is relevant to his/her skills, qualifications and recent work experience and also available in any of the states to sponsor the state nomination.
• Skill Assessment:– It is mandatory for an applicant to get a positive skill assessment for a nominated occupation before the application is lodged.
• Maintenance funds:– The applicants should show sufficient maintenance funds to obtain sponsorship from state territory.
• Health & character requirements:– The applicant has to meet with health and character requirements.

Points can also be earned on the following eligibility criteria:

• Overseas Experience points (Experience outside Australia):- The applicant for the Australia Skilled Immigration Program can claim points for having three/five/eight years of overseas experience in the nominated occupation in the last 10 years. Minimum points 5 with a maximum up to 15 can be granted.
• Overseas Qualification points (Qualifications gained outside Australia):-
  • You can receive up to 20 points based on your educational qualifications at the time you were invited to apply.
  • Points can be awarded for your highest tertiary qualification.  For example, if you have completed a Bachelor degree you can receive 15 points and if you have completed a Doctorate degree, you can receive 20 points.
  • The relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation can usually determine whether your qualifications are of a standard that is comparable to a relevant Australian qualification.
  • If the relevant assessing authority that conducts your skills assessment cannot give you an opinion about your qualifications, contact Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services.
  • Australian Diploma or Trade qualifications: You can receive 10 points for an Australian Diploma or Australian trade qualification.
  • Any other qualification: You can receive 10 points for any other qualification or award which is recognised as suitable for your nominated occupation in your skills assessment by the relevant assessing authority.

• Australian Study:- The applicant for the Australia Skilled Immigration Program can claim additional points for Australian study for a qualification which is a course of at least two Academic years or more. Minimum points 5 with a maximum up to 10 can be granted.
• Live and Study in Regional Area:- The applicant can claim 5 points, if the Australian study requirement of living and studying in a ‘regional low population growth metropolitan area’ for at least 2 years in Australia, is met.
• Australian Experience:- The applicant for the Australia Skilled Immigration Program can claim points for having worked in Australia for one/three/five/eight in one of the occupations listed on the SOL, in a full-time paid employment. Minimum points 5 with a maximum up to 20 can be granted.

• Partner Skills:- The applicant for the Australia Skilled Immigration Program can claim points under partner skills, if the partner satisfies the basic requirements of age, English language ability, qualifications and skills assessment result. The partner should obtain positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority and had at least Competent English. Spouse nominated occupation should be from the same occupations list as per the primary applicant. Partner skills will lead to 5 points.
• There are 5 points granted for Professional years for at least 12 months done from Australia in the last 4 years and Credential community language qualification points if you have been assessed as a Para professional translator by NAATI.
